PARa opens its first edition with the Summer School, proposing a critical reflection about the culture of abandonment and the consequent desertification of the rural areas as well as the creation of solutions that can help to reduce the impact of this process. A reality reinforced by the current European financial crisis and the global migratory phenomenon through the place of Barca d’Alva, Parish of Escalhão, County of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Portugal, which represents the case study.

Barca D’Alva faz parte do concelho de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo que integra o Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. O concelho de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo compõem-se de sete freguesias, nomeadamente, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Almofala, Mata de Lobos, Castelo Rodrigo, Escarigo, Vermiosa e Escalhão, da qual faz parte o lugar de Barca D´Alva. Em relação ao aglomerado, localiza-se numa zona de topografia bastante acidentada, mais propriamente na base da vertente da margem esquerda do Rio Douro – Norte e junto ao elemento de fronteira internacional, definida pelo Rio Águeda a Leste. Geologicamente, a área é constituída por xistos e granitos pertencentes ao complexo xisto grauváquico duriense. No que respeita à utilização do solo, o local apresenta diversidade florestal e uma produção agrícola favorecida pelo clima, que leva ao desenvolvimento permanente de videiras, oliveiras e amendoeiras. Barca D’Alva apresenta-se como um lugar de passagem devido à forte presença de recursos à mobilidade, a antiga via férrea, a ponte rodoviária e o rio Douro.
The site of Barca d’Alva is part of the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo and integrates the Natural Park of Douro International. The municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo is composed by seven parishes including Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Almofala, Mata de Lobos, Castelo Rodrigo, Escarigo, Vermiosa and Escalhão incorporating Barca d’Alva. The cluster is located in a rugged topography area, more specifically in the bottom of the slope on the left bank of the River Douro, North, and next to the border line defined by the Águeda river, East. Geologically, the area is composed by granites and schists belonging to the complex shale greywacke Douro. The site presents forest diversity and strong agricultural production favored by several weather lines leading to a continuous development of vines, olive and almond trees. Barca D’Alva presents itself as a place of passage due to the old railway, road bridge and the Douro river.

JOÃO SOARES. Arquitecto pela FAUP (1998). Doutorado em urbanística pelo IUAV – Veneza (2004). Professor Associado da Universidade de Évora, onde lecciona desde 2004. Director do Doutoramento em Arquitectura da mesma Universidade. Coordenador da Linha de Investigação em Arquitectura do CHAIA (Centro de História da Arte e Investigação Artística – UÉvora), de que é vice-presidente. Integra a equipa do livro “Cidades e Democracia. 30 Anos de Transformação Urbana em Portugal”, coord. Álvaro Domingues, ed. Argumentum (2006). Co-comissário, com Maddalena d’Alfonso, António Madureira e André Tavares, da exposição “Disegnare nelle Città” (2003), comissariada por Álvaro Siza e com fotografia de Gabriele Basilico. Exposta na Bienal de São Paulo; Trienal de Milão; Palácio da Artes – Nápoles; e FAUP – Porto. Coordenador, com M. d’Alfonso, do catálogo “Disegnare nelle Città, un viaggio in Portogallo” ed. Actar-D (2006), e co-Coordenador do livro “Gabriele Basilico. Arquitectura em Portugal” ed. Dafne (2006). FRANCISCO TIAGO ANTUNES PAIVA (Covilhã 1973) é Professor Auxiliar da Universidade da Beira Interior, onde dirige o 1º Ciclo de estudos em Design Multimédia. Doutor em Belas Artes, especialidade de Desenho, pela Universidade do País Basco. Licenciado em Arquitectura pela Universidade de Coimbra e em Design pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. Foi investigador-visitante na Universidade de Bordéus. É Investigador integrado do LabCom, na linha de Cinema e Multimédia, tendo como interesse principal de pesquisa os processos espacio-temporais na Arte. Autor de diversos artigos e comunicações sobre arte, design, arquitectura e política urbana e dos livros O Que Representa o Desenho? Conceito, objectos e fins do desenho moderno (2005) e Auditórios: Tipo e Morfologia (2011). É coordenador científico da DESIGNA, Conferência Internacional de Investigação em Design.
FRANCISCO TIAGO ANTUNES PAIVA (Covilhã 1973) is Assistant Professor at the University of Beira Interior, where he directs the 1st cycle of studies in Multimedia Design. Doctor on Fine Arts, specialty of drawing, by the University of the Basque Country. Graduated in Architecture from the University of Coimbra and graduated on Design by the Faculty of Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon. Was a visiting researcher at the University of Bordeaux. Is now integrated at LabCom – Online Communication Lab, in the Film and Media branch, whose main research interest focuses on spatiotemporal processes in the Arts. Author of several articles and papers on drawing, design, architecture and urban policy. has published the books “What does Drawing Represents? Concepts, objects and purposes of modern drawing” (2005) and “Auditoriums: Type and Morphology “(2011). He is the scientific coordinator of DESIGNA, International Conference on Design Research.

INÊS MOREIRA é arquiteta, investigadora e curadora, baseada no Porto, Portugal. A sua pesquisa/prática experimenta diferentes colaborações entre arquitetura, arte, dispositivo expositivo, e investigação oblíqua sobre cultura contemporânea. Nos anos mais recentes, tem desenvolvido uma pesquisa curatorial sobre o espaço, sob o título “Performing Building Sites: curatorial research in/on space”, que é a sua tese de doutoramento em curso no grupo de investigação Curatorial/Knowledge, um Think Tank PhD no Goldsmiths College, University of London. A sua pesquisa propõe uma epistemologia crítica para o campo dos estudos curatoriais e abraça a sua experiência profissional enquanto autora/designer de instalações espaciais para exposições de arte. Está a concluir o Doutoramento para o qual teve o apoio da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (PhD Dissertation Scholarships). Coordenou o Laboratório de Arte Experimental do Instituto das Artes do Ministério da Cultura (2003-2005). Mestre em Teoria da Arquitetura e Cultura Urbana [UPC Barcelona, 2003], licenciada em Arquitetura [FAUP Porto, 2001].
Inês Moreira is an architect, researcher and curator based in Oporto, Portugal. Her research/practice involves various processes of collaboration between architecture, art, exhibition display and oblique research into contemporary culture. Most recently, she has been undertaking a curatorial research project into space entitled Performing Building Sites: Curatorial Research in/on Space, which is her PhD thesis with the Curatorial/Knowledge research group, a think-tank PhD programme at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her research proposes a critical epistemology for the field of curatorial studies and embraces her professional experience as an author/designer of spatial installations for art exhibitions. At the moment she is completing her PhD, for which she received financial support from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (PhD Dissertation Scholarships). She was the coordinator of the Laboratory of Experimental Art at Instituto das Artes do Ministério da Cultura (2003-2005). She holds a Master’s degree in the Theory of Architecture and Urban Culture [UPC Barcelona, 2003] and is Graduated in Architecture [FAUP Porto, 2001].

MIGUEL PIRES AMADO, é arquiteto e urbanista, mestre em planeamento do território e doutorado em engenharia do ambiente. Especialista em reabilitação de centros urbanos e desenvolvimento sustentável. É professor auxiliar na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e professor convidado na Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa. É Coordenador do GEOTPU – Grupo de Estudos de Ordenamento do Território e Planeamento Urbano da FCT UNL e responsável pelo Curso de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Construção Sustentável da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. Integra o CITAD – Centro de Investigação do Território, Arquitectura e Design da Universidade Lusíada. Participa em diversas comissões Técnico-Científicas internacionais e é responsável por colaborações com entidades públicas em Angola, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe e Moçambique.
MIGUEL PIRES AMADO, is an Architect and Urban Planner, Master in Territory Planning of the and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and a Specialist in rehabilitation and sustainable development of urban centers. Is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology from the Nova University of Lisbon and a visiting professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Lusíada University of Lisbon. It is the coordinator of the GEOTPU – Research Group on Land Use Planning and Urban Planning of FCT UNL and the responsible for the Postgraduate Course Studies in Sustainable Building at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Integrates the Centre for Research in Planning, Architecture and Design – CITAD – at the Lusíada University. Participates in several International Technical-Scientific committees and is responsible for collaboration with public entities in Angola, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Principe and Mozambique.

Geógrafa, Mestre e Doutora em Antropologia, Investigadora Auxiliar no LNEC – Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, onde desde 1991 estuda as culturas urbanas de uso/apropriação do espaço e de conservação e reabilitação do património. Membro convidado do GT Derecho a la Ciudad en America Latina do Conselho Latino-Americano de Ciências Sociais/CLACSO. Foi Coordenadora do Núcleo de Ecologia Social/LNEC (maio 2009/2013). Na área da intervenção socio-urbanística, coordenou o Apoio Técnico-Metodológico ao Projeto Velhos Guetos, Novas Centralidades (2005-2008)conforme desenvolvido em Rabo de Peixe (S. Miguel/Açores) e Bairros das Alagoas (Peso da Régua). Presentemente estuda as questões socioculturais associadas ao uso e conservação de recursos (água/energia), às dinâmicas de adaptação aos processos de transformação urbana, e à relação entre património material e imaterial na conservação do património arquitetónico.
Geographer, MSc and PhD in Anthropology, Assistant Researcher at LNEC – National Civil Engineering Laboratory, where since 1991 studying urban cultures of use / appropriation of space and the conservation and enhancement of heritage. Invited member of GT Derecho a la Ciudad en America Latina / CLASCO Latin American Council of Social Sciences. Was the Coordinator of Social Ecology group / LNEC (May 2009/2013). In the field of socio-urban intervention, coordinated the Technical Support Project Methodology to Old Ghettos, New Centrality (2005-2008) as the developed in Rabo de Peixe (S. Miguel / Azores) and Neighborhoods of Alagoas (weight Ruler). Currently studying socio-cultural issues related with the use and conservation of resources (water / power), adaptation to dynamic processes of urban transformation, and the relationship between tangible and intangible heritage in the conservation of architectural heritage.
